    He gave it his best shot but Michael Smith just came up short in the World Championship Final.

    Michael Van Gerwen won by seven ses to three to claim a third World crown at the Alexandra Palace.

    The scoreline doesn’t tell the story or reflect how well Smith fought back but the St Helens star just left himself too much to do.

    He has shown he is World class and there is no doubt that this is only the start. He should be very proud of what he has achieved.

    Keegan Brown has set up a mouthwatering all Unicorn 2nd Round clash with Jelle Klaasen at the World Championship.

    A 95.7 average with six 180s was enough to take him to a comfortable 3-0 win over Karel Sedlacek on Saturday night at the Alexandra Palace.

    When he was good, he was very good but Brown was the first to admit he needs much more consistency in his game.

    It was a relieved Gary Anderson who booked his spot in the 3rd Round of the World Championship.

    The Team Unicorn star had to battle before overcoming Northern Ireland qualifier Kevin Burness 3-1.

    “I was nervous. I always am first game. I have a lot of work to do for sure but yes, just relieved to get that one out of the way!” he said.

    Burness missed two darts to go two legs clear in the opening set before Anderson took it with a 13 darter in the deciding leg. His opponent hit back to level the match despite a 130 finish on the bull from Gary in that second set.

    But class told and Anderson produced a string of 180s as he won six legs

    Despite the frosty weather, things are beginning to heat up in the Europa League for three British teams.

    Last night signalled the end of the group stages, with only Arsenal coming away with a victory having already secured progression through to the knock-out stages.

    Perhaps the most fortunate team to make their way to the last-32 was Celtic, who qualified despite a loss to FC Red Bull Salzburg thanks to a shock result that saw Norwegian side Rosenborg draw with RB Leipzig in Germany.

    It wasn’t to be for Jeffrey de Zwaan on the opening night at the World Championship.

    But the Team Unicorn ace gave the World Champion a real scare at the Alexandra Palace.

    Rob Cross won their thrilling 2nd Round encounter by three sets to one on Thursday night. But that only tells half the story.

    De Zwaan’s 106 average was the second highest losing average in World Championship history. The young Dutchman forcing Cross to produce his best darts in many months.

    De Zwaan raced through the opening set in superb style winning it in three straight legs. Cross hit back to win a dramatic second set with a 96 finish in a deciding leg.
