Cullen's near miss in Ireland

A case of what might have been for Joe Cullen at the World Grand Prix.

The young Unicorn ace went down 3-1 to Daryl Gurney in the second round but the scoreline only tells half the story.

Cullen found himself two sets down, but got himself back into it and should have sent the match into a deciding set.

After trailing by those two sets, Joe then reeled off three legs on the spin to get himself back in contention. He took the opening leg of set four and looked to be on a roll.

The second leg turned the match in Gurney's favour. Cullen missed SIX darts to take it and the Irishman banged in a 127 finish on the bull. It was a body blow for the Unicorn man and Gurney closed out the match.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, 2015 WGP Champion Robert Thornton set up a quarter-final with Gurney as he beat Dave Chisnall in a thrilling last leg decider.....but only after Chizzy had missed five match darts.

John Henderson, who beat defending champion Michael van Gerwen, continued his good run with a 3-1 victory over Alan Norris.

Henderson will play Raymond van Barneveld in the quarter-finals. Barney brushed aside Steve Beaton in straight sets.

Tuesday 2nd Round:

Dave Chisnall 2-3 Robert Thornton

Daryl Gurney 3-1 Joe Cullen

John Henderson 3-1 Alan Norris

Raymond van Barneveld 3-0 Steve Beaton
