Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram is the latest in a long line of young South African batters taking the International game by storm. The opener captained the South African u-19 side in the 2014 World Cup, becoming the first South African captain to win a World Cup at any age-group level whilst also being the leading run-scorer for his side and third overall in the tournament.

Soon after, he earned his first Test cap for the Proteas in the home Tests against Bangladesh in 2017 and had a remarkable series, scoring 255 runs in 3 innings, finishing the series with an average of 255. Since then, he hasn’t quite managed to maintain an average over 2.5x that of Sir Don Bradman, but a remarkable second innings 143 against Australia, in the first Test of what would become an infamous series, put to bed any doubts that Markram may not be able to convert his prolificacy in age-group and domestic cricket into the international game.

With age on his side, Markram looks set to have a long international career ahead of him. His assured strokeplay and calm demeanour often leads to him being touted as a future Test captain, a role he has already excelled at in a few ODI games, despite only making his debut in the format at the end of 2017.
