Enigmatic, enthralling and exciting, the second coming of Ben Duckett on the international stage has seen him take to opening the batting like a fish to water.
Returning to the Test side with a bang at the end of 2022, making 357 runs in a historic series victory over Pakistan, Duckett hasn’t looked back since, putting numbers on the board up there with the best batters across the world.
Back in 2016, when he first burst onto the international scene, the southpaw was coming off back-to-back seasons in which he’d amassed 1,000+ runs in the County Championship, including a career-best of 282*.
Those returns, which saw him named the PCA’s Young Cricket and Cricketer of the Year – the first man to win both awards in the same season – handed him the chance to join Alastair Cook at the top of England’s order.
Renowned for his ability against spin, a 50 in just his fourth innings against Bangladesh earmarked his credentials but he would ultimately have to wait a further six years to make a lasting mark on the national side.
Unperturbed, Duckett continued to pile on the runs in the county game, making the move across to Nottinghamshire in 2019 and hitting the quickest double hundred, off 168 balls, for the club.
As dominant in the shortest format as he has turned out to be across Test matches, the left-hander struck 340 runs to help the Outlaws lift their second T20 title, his third overall, in 2020.
Translating his red-ball success into 50-over cricket, Duckett seized his chance at the top of the order for a new-look England white-ball side with 107 versus Australia in September.
Those same foes loom large next winter, where Ben will be a key component of Brendon McCullum’s side looking to triumph Down Under.
