How to Choose Your Size and Style of Wicket Keeping Pad?

Wicket keeping pads, are all ambidextrous in design and are available in a range of sizes from Small Junior to Adults.

In terms of sizing, it is recommended that you measure the distance from the top of your instep (where the tongue of your shoe sits) to the middle of your kneecap. This will give you a measurement to compare to the Gunn and Moore Wicket Keeping Pad size guide. Wicket Keeping Pads are intended to be shorter fitting than Batting Pads, whilst designed to offer you comprehensive protection, particularly across the shin and lower leg area. The Wicket Keeping Pads should cover your knee area; however, they shouldn’t cover too much of the upper leg. You should be able to squat comfortably and move in all directions whilst wearing your Wicket Keeping Pads.

How To Wear your Wicket Keeping Pad?

Wicket Keeping Pads are designed for your legs and are not to be worn to protect another area of the body. This product is not designed for any other sport or activity. The Velcro straps around the rear of your leg. The top strap should sit below the rear of your knee and not be obstructive or restrictive. The lower strap should sit around your lower calf. The front padded side is designed to sit on the front of your leg around the shin region, over your Cricket Trousers. The instep of the pad should sit comfortably and securely on the top of your foot.

How To Adjust your Wicket Keeping Pad?

Gunn and Moore Wicket Keeping Pads have two Velcro straps across the rear of the Wicket Keeping Pad. These straps can be adjusted to your desired fit around your calf area. Wicket Keeping Pads shouldn’t move around when you are moving to catch the ball and they should be secure when diving. Wicket Keeping Pads should feel light and comfortable, during prolonged play.

Caring for your Wicket Keeping Pads?

During the life span of your Wicket Keeping Pads, they will naturally be prone to wear and tear such as small scuffs to the knee area from Wicket Keepers adjusting the Wicket Keeping Pads with their Wicket Keeping Gloves, as well as small markings across the front of the Wicket Keeping Pads caused when the Wicket Keeping Pads come into contact with the ground whilst diving to catch the ball. It is also common to see small scuffs/areas of wear around the instep area caused by friction against footwear.

In many cases, the more you use your equipment the shorter the lifespan will be. However, with proper care and maintenance, you can extend this lifespan.

·      Do not expose to any solvents or harsh chemicals.

·      Where possible avoid exposure to direct sunlight or any extreme conditions / temperatures, as this will affect the lifespan and appearance of your wicket keeping pads.

·      Do not modify, your wicket keeping pads in any way such as: cutting or removing material from any area of the pad.

·      Unfortunately, the chemicals in sweat can be damaging to cricket equipment. Wicket Keeping Pads tend to be worn for longer periods compared to batting pads meaning that they are more likely to get wet from sweat. If the Wicket Keeping Pads become wet through sweat during normal use, store them in well-ventilated conditions to help remove any residual moisture from the item.

·      If you notice excess dirt on your wicket keeping pads, you can remove this by using a clean, soft, damp cloth and then store the pads in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, until completely dry.

If you notice any of the following, then it would be suggested for you to replace your Wicket Keeping Pads:

·      Large splits or tears across your Wicket Keeping Pads.

·      Velcro straps no longer securing the Wicket Keeping Pad to your leg.

·      Severe discolouration – a small amount of discolouration is expected from normal use such as marks from the sun, sweat, dust, dirt and impact from a Cricket ball.

·      If the level of Cricket you regularly play at has improved since you purchased your Wicket Keeping Pads and you no longer feel they provide you with suitable protection required.

Young Cricketers are likely to outgrow their Wicket Keeping Pads, meaning they are no longer fully protected across the desired area, often leaving the knee area exposed. It is important to regularly check junior equipment and ensure that it is still a safe size to use.

When storing your Wicket Keeping Pads we recommend the following:

·      Use a kit bag to store all your equipment, in a well-ventilated area that isn’t exposed to extreme temperatures.

·      Secure any Velcro straps to stop them from catching on itself or any other equipment.

·      Ideally in the storage bag provided when purchasing your Wicket Keeping Pads.

·      If storing equipment over an extended period, such as the winter, we recommend removing any excess dirt and moisture from your Wicket Keeping Pads before leaving them in a well-ventilated area and away from direct sunlight.

·      If your Wicket Keeping Pads have been cleaned or they are wet from normal use. Please ensure they are completely dry before returning them to your kit bag or before they are stored for an extended time.
