How to Choose Your Size and Style of Thigh Protection?
There are two main styles of Thigh protection. These are the traditional Thigh Pad and Inner Thigh Pad or the modern Thigh Pad set, which has both inner and outer thigh pads in one system. It is recommend that all players wear some form of thigh protection when batting against a hard Cricket Ball.
Traditional Thigh Pad | Thigh Pad Set | Padded Shorts |
Protects the leg facing towards the bowler – Can be used in conjunction with an Inner Thigh Pad | Protects both the outer and inner thighs | Protects both the outer and inner thighs. Also offers an integrated pouch for Abdominal Guard |
These examples are all right-handed Thigh Pads. The larger pad is designed to sit on the outside of the left thigh which will be facing the bowler when a right-handed batter is in their stance waiting for a ball to be delivered at them.
A left-handed thigh pad sits on the right-hand thigh .This should be a comfortable fit that protects the thigh area but does not restrict movement.
Junior players are likely to outgrow their equipment, meaning they may not be fully protected across the desired area. This may also cause some restriction when running between the wickets and/or trying to play certain shots. It is important to regularly check junior equipment and ensure that it is still a safe size to use.
How to Wear your Thigh Protection?
Thigh Pads
Thigh Pads are designed to protect your upper leg area whilst playing Cricket and are not to be worn to protect another area of the body. This product is not designed for any other sport or activity. The soft towelled / curved area of the protector should sit on your thigh and the padded protective area should be on the outside facing the bowler.
Shorts & Protective Padding Set
Protective Shorts are designed to protect your upper leg area whilst playing Cricket and are not to be worn to protect another area of the body. This product is not designed for any other sport or activity. The padding should fit securely inside the internal pockets of the short, with the larger pad on the side facing towards the bowler. There is also a third pocket inside the shorts to hold an Abdominal Guard.
How to Adjust your Thigh Protection?
With most Thigh Pads, there are two Velcro straps. One around the waist, one around the thigh. On Thigh Pad Sets the inner thigh pad is normally fitted to the hip area with Velcro with the options to be adjusted to an optimum position or this can be removed if preferred. Allowing for versatility for any players personal preference for both protection and comfort.
Padded Shorts do not offer any adjustment in terms of waist or thigh circumference. Therefore, it is imperative that you ensure the size is the correct one for you.
Some players prefer to just wear a Thigh Pad. We recommend having both an Inner Thigh Pad and a Thigh Pad to ensure comprehensive protection.
Caring for your Thigh Protection?
In many cases, the more you use your equipment the shorter the lifespan. However, with proper care and maintenance, you can help to extend this lifespan.
· Don’t expose your equipment to any solvents or harsh chemicals.
· Where possible avoid exposure to direct sunlight, any extreme temperatures or conditions as this will affect the lifespan and appearance of your protective equipment.
· Do not modify, your protection in any way such as: by cutting, removing or adding material from any area of your equipment.
· Unfortunately, the chemicals in sweat can be damaging to cricket equipment. If the protective equipment becomes wet through sweat during normal use, store it in well-ventilated conditions to help remove any residual moisture from the item.
· If you notice excess dirt on your protective equipment, you can remove this by using a clean, soft, damp cloth and then store the gloves in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, till completely dry.
If you notice any of the following, then it would be suggested for you to replace your Thigh Pads:
· Large Splits / Tears
· Velcro Straps are no longer securing the Thigh Pad in place.
· Severe discolouration – a small amount of discolouration is expected from normal use, such as marks from the sun, sweat, dust, dirt and impact from a Cricket ball.
· If the level of Cricket you regularly play at has improved since you purchased your Thigh Protection and you no longer feel it provides you with suitable protection.
Young Cricketers are likely to outgrow their Thigh Pads, meaning they are no longer fully protected across the desired area. This may also cause some restriction when running between the wickets. It is important to regularly check junior equipment and ensure that it is still a safe size to use.
When storing your Thigh Pads we recommend the following:
· Use a kit bag to store all your equipment, in a well-ventilated area that isn’t exposed to extreme temperatures.
· Secure any Velcro straps to stop them from catching on itself or any other equipment.
· If storing equipment over an extended period, such as the winter, we recommend removing any excess dirt and moisture before leaving in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.
· If any item of equipment has been cleaned or is wet from normal use. Please ensure it is completely dry before returning to your kit bag or before storing for an extended period.
