How to Choose Your Size and Style of Batting Gloves?
Batting Gloves, come in a range of shapes, sizes and designs, including right hand and left hand variants. The two main design styles of Batting Gloves are often referred to as ‘sausage’ finger or ‘split’ finger designs. Traditionally, the ‘sausage’ design has offered a greater level of protection, whilst the ‘split’ design has offered more flexibility. However, with most modern Batting Gloves, both comfort and protection are offered across both designs at a variety of price points to fit every budget.
A right-handed pair of Batting Gloves has protection to the thumb on the right hand and a left-handed pair has protection on the left thumb. This is because the thumb on the bottom hand can be exposed to a rising delivery, so requires protection.
To get a gauge what size Batting Gloves you require, we recommend measuring the distance from the base of your wrist to the end of your middle finger. As well as the width of the widest part across your palm excluding your thumb. Once you have these measurements please reference the Gunn and Moore Batting Glove size guide.
If a pair of Batting Gloves are too small you will not be suitably protected across the entirety of your hand. On the other hand, if a set of Batting Gloves are too big, this could cause difficulty holding a Cricket Bat, and cause a lack of feeling and control.
How To Wear your Batting Gloves?
Batting Gloves are designed to protect your hands whilst playing Cricket and are not to be worn to protect any other part of the body. This product is not designed for any other sport or activity. The soft leather area of the glove should sit on your palm and the padded protective area should sit on the back of your hand, with the Velcro closure securely fastened.
How To Adjust your Batting Gloves?
Gunn and Moore Batting Gloves have a Velcro closure on the wristband of the Batting Glove. These straps can be adjusted to your desired fit around the wrist area. Batting Gloves should be a secure but comfortable fit, allowing players to be able to move their hands freely whilst being protected across the entire rear of their hands.
Caring for your Batting Gloves?
In many cases, the more you use your equipment the shorter the lifespan. However, with proper care and maintenance, you can help to extend this lifespan by following these steps:
· Do not expose your Batting Gloves to any solvents or harsh chemicals.
· Where possible avoid exposure to direct sunlight, any extreme temperatures or conditions as this will affect the lifespan and appearance of your Batting Gloves.
· Do not modify, your Batting Gloves in any way such as: cutting, removing or adding material from any area of the glove.
· Unfortunately, the chemicals in sweat can be damaging to cricket equipment. If the Batting Gloves become wet through sweat during normal use, store them in well-ventilated conditions to help remove any residual moisture from the item.
· If you notice excess dirt on your Batting Gloves, you can remove this by using a clean, soft, damp cloth and then store the Batting Gloves in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, until completely dry.
If you notice any of the following, then it would be suggested for you to replace your Batting Gloves:
· Large Splits / Tears – Particularly in and around the palm area of you Batting Gloves.
· Velcro Straps no longer securing your Batting Gloves on your wrist
· Severe discolouration – a small amount of discolouration is expected from normal use, such as marks from the sun, sweat, dust, dirt and impact from a Cricket ball.
· The leather palm has become stiff and dry feeling from extended exposure to sweat as well has losing some its grip when holding the bat
· If the level of Cricket you regularly play at has improved since you purchased your Batting Gloves and you no longer feel they provide you with suitable protection required.
Young Cricketers are likely to outgrow their Batting Gloves, meaning they are no longer fully protected across the desired area. This may also cause some restriction when gripping the bat and trying to play certain shots. It is important to regularly check junior equipment and ensure that it is still a safe size to use.
When storing your batting gloves we recommend the following:
· Use a kit bag to store all your equipment, in a well-ventilated area that isn’t exposed to extreme temperatures.
· Secure any Velcro straps to stop them from catching on itself or any other equipment.
· Ideally, use the storage bag provided when purchasing the gloves to separate your equipment in your kit bag
· If storing equipment over an extended period, such as the winter, we recommend removing any excess dirt and moisture from the gloves before leaving them in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.
· If the gloves have been cleaned or they are wet from normal use. Please ensure they are completely dry before returning them to your kit bag or before they are stored for an extended period.
